40 Days

DSCF1230The bible has many references to 40 days.  The one I’m thinking of is the 40 days (minus the Sunday celebration days) of Lent.  I grew up in nondenominational or protestant churches that never observed Lent, Ash Wednesday or any of that.  We did Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter but the rest was unknown to me until 3-4 years ago when we started attending a church here.  It is a nondenominational church but they were deeply rooted in church history.

The first time I received ashes on my head I was a little freaked out but tried to roll with it.  As I did the Lent Bible study and heard the sermons relating to all of this I was deeply moved to participate.

This year the church is not having an Ash Wednesday service and now I miss it.  I googled for an Ash Wednesday service in my area and nothing.  I found a few Catholic services but no protestant services. In 2007 several protestant churches had services.  This year nothing.  Everything is topic related.  I enjoyed this time of year as a time to reflect on depending on Christ.  When you give something up it serves as a reminder every time you crave it that you are to depend on Christ.

I guess we don’t need a special time of year to do that.  We can fast and pray anytime.  However it is so easy to get caught up in the day to day.  I think that is why God had the ancients set aside days for remembrance and celebration.  It’s a structure that stays in place so that every so often we stop and remember to rely on God, thank him for everyday blessings and ask Him to increase our faith.

Daily prayer, weekly worship with believers and seasonal times of reflection these ancient structures are so important to living out the faith.

Does your church observe Lent?

Please share your thoughts with me.

The King and I

722

*Update*  Thankfully someone else was taking pictures during the performance!

Ariel2Arielperf

These are pictures from the night of the play in May.  Sorry for the delay Grandmas and Grandpas.  Ariel was Ying the Narrarator for the King and I.  We sprayed her hair black and she had to wear stage makeup.  We didn't think pictures were allowed during the show due to a video they were taping of the performance.  Here is our star before the performance.

She did such a wonderful job.  We think she was born to act.

After a job well done.  As you can see they added some more makeup backstage.  I forgot the eyebrows.

Volunteer Appreciation Day

DSCF1080This is the team from our church that helps at the rest home.  Some were unable to be there due to appreciation day was on a Tuesday and they had to work.

DSCF1073

Madeline, Curtis and Jared.  They the young and the faithful.  They volunteer every other week at the bible study in the rest home and have help numerous times on Sunday push the wheelchairs of the residents to church around the corner.

DSCF1079

This is Joyce(in the green) and Betty.  Joyce came to the hospital with Patsy(not pictured here) as soon as the heard about my stroke.  They were so supportive calling and praying for me constantly.  Joyce came to the house and made dinner for the girls, drove Ariel to drama practice and cleaned the house for me while I was in the hospital.

I haven't been able to volunteer since the stroke.  However, Curtis and Jared's sweet mother Allecia has been driving to my house and taking Madeline so she can continue to be there.

These pictures were taken the day before my stroke.  My car's battery went dead in the parking lot of the rest home.  I was frustrated because it thwarted my whole day.  AAA was 2 hours late and I had Madeline, Curtis and Jared with me.  Dale had to come help us and he was in the middle of a deadline at work.  Joyce took the boys home since it was taking forever.  I thought that was an inconvenience.  Then the next day I had a stroke.  That sure put the day in perspective.

I have so many people to thank for helping me.  My friend Charlotte who sat with me over 4 hours to make sure the nurses were taking care of me more than once,  took me home from the hospital the second time and brought dinners and provided rides to the kids.  All my friends who visited and helped my kids get to their activities. Allecia, Kim, Jill, Kathi, Carrie, Tami, Mary-Beth, Dawn, Bonnie and Laurie.  Countless friends who sent me encouraging cards and held me up in prayer.  My friend Ivy made sure I looked good in the hospital by bringing me beauty products.

I don't know how scary this whole thing would have been without all of you.

My mother wasn't able to come until after the second hospitalization.  She helped us tremendously my cooking and driving me to appointments, the kids to activities, bought me the tray and rolling carts to help me get around the kitchen again.  She was here for over a month taking care of all of us.

My family was awesome too.  Sweet Madeline had to take on a lot of responsibility before my mom came.  She was making dinners, doing laundry, grocery shopping and taking care of Ariel for over three weeks.  She was very glad when my mom arrived.  After my mom left she has still been helping with all of this on days my energy runs out.  Ariel has started to help a lot more too and she prays for mom's recovery every night.

My husband has been so wonderful.  He has had to suddenly do everything I did before.   Grocery shopping, paying the bills and taking me to all my doctors appointments.  The help from my friends not only helped me but my precious family walk through a difficult time.

Young Believers Class

As promised just about 3 months ago here are the pictures of Ariel's Young Believer's step 1.

She wrote her name on the cross to symbolize Jesus died to take away her sins.

DSCF1060

DSCF1061

She learned about the 1st Passover and how John the Baptist said "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. "

Then her teacher spoke of the Last Suppper and called it the meal of rememberance.

The wine represents Christ's blood and the bread His body.

z100407315  "Believers prepare for communion by remembering how Jesus suffered and died on the cross to bring them from darkness into the Kingdom of Light."

Below is the class and Miss Gaye.
